The Slate Digital ML-1A is a best-in-class large-diaphragm condenser microphone designed to work with mic modelling. This allows you to bring a complete ‘mic locker’ into your studio without needing a cupboard full of fragile classics. Whether you’re recording vocals, guitar or voice-over, you capture a solid foundation and only then choose the character and vibe that best suits your production. This allows you to work faster, more consistently and with far more options than with a single fixed microphone sound.

Mic modelling with VMS

Connect the ML-1A to the Virtual Microphone System (VMS) plug-in and you’ll gain access to a collection of legendary tube, condenser and ribbon microphones as models. You get 18 mic models as standard (including the Radio France Signature collection), and this can be expanded via Complete Access. For extra creativity, you can blend two microphone models to create your own hybrid sound. Another handy feature is “Mono In, Stereo Out”, which allows you to widen mono recordings whilst keeping the entire mix mono-compatible.

Flexible control and platform compatibility

With the VMS plug-in, you can fine-tune your recording even after it’s been made: adjust the proximity effect, control the intensity of the colouration and add analogue warmth with selectable virtual preamps and saturation. In terms of software, it works well on both macOS and Windows, with support for all common plug-in formats. Licences and activation are handled via iLok (Cloud, iLok 2/3 or Machine-ID, depending on your licence). This means the ML-1A integrates seamlessly into virtually any modern DAW setup.
