General

Akai's Timbre Wolf is the latest addition to the wolf family that once started with the Rhythm Wolf. This analogue synthesizer has four independent voices - each with its own 32-step sequencer - that can be used as four mono synths, a four-voice unison synth, or a four-voice polyphonic synth. Get a little creative dividing your sequences between the various voices, and you're able to create some serious tunes. Unlike an old mono synth, the Timbre Wolf offers you four voices to build your sequences. Turn up the howl knob to increase the wolf factor (and add some overdrive), tweak a few parameters, and you've got yourself a seriously beastly bass line.

Sound characteristics of the Akai Timbre Wolf

The Timbre Wolf allows you to adjust the volume, the tuning and the oscillator waveform (sawtooth, square wave) for each voice. In the filter section you'll find the familiar cut-off and resonance controls, as well as an envelope depth knob that lets you determine the extent to which the decay envelope is filtered. You might have seen this parameter selection before on a particular legendary vintage bass synthesizer - in essence the Timbre Wolf offers the same thing, times four!

Additional features

This Akai Wolf offers two octaves of full-size keys and is equipped with a pitch-bend wheel. As such, the bass synth is portable, but still pleasant to play, making it ideal for gigs. A set of octave buttons - a standard feature for keyboards of this size - increase your range. The back panel offers is equipped with USB/MIDI and MIDI connectors, a main output and, as a nice bonus, four independent outputs (one for each voice). These separate outputs are particularly practical, as they enable you to apply individual panning and effects by means of a mixer.

AKAI Timbre Wolf analogue synthesizer

Wrote the following about AKAI Timbre Wolf analogue synthesizer
