A pair of ribbon microphones is a great addition to your collection of microphones and doesn't have to be expensive, especially with the Royer Labs R-10 set. It's much like the renowned R-121 but won't hurt your wallet as much. Just like virtually every other ribbon microphone, the R-10 has a figure-of-8 pickup pattern, meaning a matched pair of these mics allow for a Blumlein stereo configuration. This config works exceptionally well when used in combination with an overhead drum, piano, choir or even an orchestra. Though ribbon microphones are infamous for their vulnerability, the R-10 is solidly built and can be used in live settings.

Over de R10's: Hele mooie Mics, maar weet wat je in huis haalt als je ribbon Mics koopt. Ze klinken in eerste instantie wat "dof", omdat ze geen gehypet hoog hebben, zoals de meeste condensator mics dat wel hebben. Maar ribbons reageren uitermate prettig op eq en dan krijg je een hoog wat veel natuurlijker klinkt dan bij condensator mics. Het mid voelt wat vintage-achtig (aanwezig, maar niet schel) aan en het laag is mooi rond en gedefinieerd. Vergeleken met de duurdere R121's klinken ze minder "smooth", meer aanwezig mid. Voor drums vond ik ze helemaal te gek (overheads, maar ook als close mics), voor akoestische gitaar iets minder, maar voor een amp zijn ze juist weer ideaal. Voor vocals zou ik ze niet snel kiezen, hoewel ik wel denk dat ze een oplossing kunnen zijn voor schelle stemmen. Wat ook interessant is, is dat de achterkant (ribbons hebben figure of 8 karakteristiek), net anders klinkt dan de voorkant, iets helderder. Vond ik voor overheads nog net wat mooier.
Qua looks vind ik de R10's echt een schot in de roos. Ook zijn ze zeer robuust gebouwd en toch niet te zwaar voor een simpele mic stand.
Let op, je hebt wel een (stille) preamp nodig met veel gain, want ze hebben (zoals alle ribbons) een lage output. Royer maakt ook een dB booster, maar die kost iets van 200 euro. Dat is jammer, want ik denk toch dat je deze nodig gaat hebben bij stillere bronnen.
Maar al met al krijg je echt waar voor je geld met deze mics, mits je weet wat je zoekt. Een sjieke ribbon sound, zonder dat je een hypotheek hoeft af te sluiten. Ik had mazzel dat ik ze B-Stock kon kopen (en daar weer 10% korting op kreeg), maar ook voor de normale prijs kun je er geen buil aan vallen!
