The AEA R84A is the active version of AEA’s R84: it features the same legendary Big Ribbon element and the same transformer DNA as the classic R44, but with JFET electronics and a custom Lehle transformer that frees the mic from the strict preamp requirements typical of passive ribbons. Formerly known as the A840; essentially an R84 with a built-in preamp. An ideal mic for engineers who prioritise flexibility over pure passive authenticity: touring musicians, project studios without a dedicated ribbon preamp, or anyone wishing to record quiet sources without worrying about preamp impedance. In short: the same sound as the R84, but without the preamp restrictions.

Features of the AEA R84A

You get 12dB more output compared to the passive R84, plus a stable impedance that guarantees consistent frequency response, regardless of the preamp connected to it. No more minimum gain requirements, no more critical impedance matching: the R84A works perfectly with virtually any preamp, including those found in standard audio interfaces. That extra 12dB is exactly what you need for quiet sources such as vocals or an acoustic guitar at a distance. The active circuitry also suppresses interference over long cable runs or near heavy lighting rigs. The R84A retains the full sonic character of the R84; the same warm, detailed ribbon sound with a smooth high-end roll-off, reduced sibilance and a manageable proximity effect. Only now without the preamp dependency that can be a real headache with passive ribbon mics. Ideal for engineers on the road who have to make do with a different preamp every night, or for those who simply don’t have a dedicated ribbon preamp with high impedance and +60dB gain in their rack.
