As a rule, your studio is the biggest source of interference in your mix. After all, the walls, floor and ceiling cause reflections, and these reflections colour the sound that reaches your ears via your studio monitors. That’s why we’re going to colour the sound from your DAW indirectly, in such a way that it reaches your ears neutrally. So we need to measure the studio and the tonal character of the studio monitors themselves, in order to neutralise the unwanted colouration. That is exactly what you do with IK Multimedia ARC X. It comes with a measurement microphone and the software – it’s a complete solution. You can create a profile of your studio using multiple measurement points (as required) to neutralise the unwanted colouration. Virtual monitoring is also possible, allowing you to simulate other studio monitors – at least in terms of tonal colour. You’ll need an audio interface because of the measurement microphone’s XLR connector (and its requirement for phantom power), but for most studio owners that will be a mere formality.
