General

Equator's D5 coaxial active studio monitors - supplied as a pair - have been specifically designed for recording engineers who are looking for powerful yet compact speakers. Harnessing power in a modest housing is a challenge, but Equator has succeeded with flying colours. The D5 has a coaxial design, which means the tweeter and the woofer are mounted on the same axis. As such, the speaker's audio emanates from a single source, so you won't have to deal with the same phase issues many regular speakers pose. Phase differences may be minuscule, but mixing is all about detail, so any discrepancy - no matter how tiny - is unacceptable.

Characteristics of the Equator D5 Coaxial Active Studio Monitor

Don't be fooled by the D5's compact housing - this monitor packs a good deal of power. Its frequency range alone, which extends from 53 to 20,000 Hz, beats that of a good many other speakers. Additionally, the D5 boasts a maximum SPL that more than suffices for most mixing activities: 103 dB. If you're looking for a set of compact speakers for a modest mobile studio (such as a van), the Equator D5s are just the ticket. They even sport a boundary selection switch, which allows you to optimise their output for their position (against a wall or in a corner, for instance).

Target Audience

It's pretty clear that the D5 belongs in the studio. With a frequency response of 53 Hz - 20 kHz (+/- 3 dB), it's a decisive all-rounder, especially thanks to the 5.25-inch woofer. Such details also make the D5 a great monitor for small rooms where there isn't space for a mid-field speaker. A handy switch has also been built in, so you can optimise the sound should you wish to place the unit up against a wall.

Equator D5 Coaxial Active Studio Monitor (Set of 2)

Wrote the following about Equator D5 Coaxial Active Studio Monitor (Set of 2)
From everything I had read the D5s were said to be the best near-field monitors in this price range. I knew they would be small but they're roughly half the size of the Spirit Absolute 2's they are replacing. The sound, however, is much bigger. The stereo imaging is very good, it's easy to be on-axis with both the woofer and the tweater due to the co-ax design. They're stunningly good for something so small and relatively inexpensive. Highly recommended!
