Erica Synths Steampipe Physical Modelling Synthesizer

Developed in collaboration with 112dB.com, the Erica Synths Steampipe is all about physical modelling, or more specifically: Karplus-Strong string synthesis. That means that instead of classic sawtooth waveforms and filters, you'll basically be using extensive delay lines to create the sound of plucked strings or, with a tweak or two, convincing wind instrument sounds.

There aren't many physical modelling bits of kit out there, let alone units that offer polyphonic sound. The Steampipe, however, has an eight-voice polyphony. What's also pretty sweet is that it comes with a fat reverb effect that, combined with the internal sound engine, is perfect for generating washy soundscapes. The large number of knobs on the face of this synth is also a dead giveaway that the sound-shaping potential is huge, so expect extensive modulation options and numerous adjustable settings.

Who's It For?

The Erica Synths Steampipe may feature some acoustic elements (it actually supports overblowing) but it's still a synthesizer and not a real wind instrument, meaning it hasn't been designed for wind instrument sounds for virtual orchestrations. The unique synth-style timbre does lend itself to experimental sound design and is a great choice for anyone who prefers a hands-on approach, polyphonic sound and comprehensive options.
