General

The Modal Electronics Carbon8X is a synthesiser for the true sound tinker. The Carbon8 has previously been released in more compact models. With the Carbon8X, this synth is now available with a 61-key keyboard – surely the favourite choice for many keyboardists. This isn’t a synth you can get to grips with in a weekend; the sound-design possibilities are truly off the charts, with such an enormous range of options available. There are 56 waveforms (18 algorithms, 38 wavetables), 34 types of filters, 15 waveforms for the LFOs… there are larger and more expensive synths that offer less than this.

Sound design and target audience of the Modal Electronics Carbon8X

It’s a versatile synth that’s ideal for pads and leads, for example. To this end, it offers eight-voice polyphony, with two oscillators per voice. For extra grandeur, you can use the effects, such as reverb, chorus and delay. You can unleash your creativity with the arpeggiator and sequencer. And if you’re really up to date, you might want to work with the MODAL app for Mac, PC, iOS and Android, in combination with the Carbon8X. All in all, it’s a lovely synth that’s well worth taking the time to explore, and given its many possibilities, it’ll certainly take a while before you get to know it properly!
