Product information

General

The Roland Fantom is essentially the definition of 'big'. Even back in 2019 when the original Fantom 6, 7 and 8 first dropped, Roland unleashed some whopping chunks of synth-based hardware, each model loaded with masses of sounds, options, effects, plenty of connection ports and plenty of inspiration for producers and musicians the world over. In the years since, a few things have happened, especially at Roland who, in response to the ever growing role of software in the studio, has developed the Roland Cloud and populated it with virtual versions of some of their own legendary synthesizers. Add the OG Fantom to the Roland Cloud and what you get is the Fantom 7 EX.

The Future-Proofed Roland Fantom 7 EX

This is a workstation, so you're getting an expansive sound engine complete with sequencing options, all of which is navigated via a crystal clear full colour touchscreen, granting access to the best possible sound and the fastest possible workflow all without having to switch on an actual computer. And, since this is an extended edition of the Fantom that came out in 2019, it now comes with a stack of virtual vintage synths on board, including the Jupiter-8, the SH-101 and the JX-3P (which can be downloaded for free from the Roland Cloud by all Fantom EX users), plus n/zyme, the JD-800, Juno-106, JX-8P, V-Piano, a tonewheel organ and some outstanding reverbs. In terms of sound alone, you're looking at a considerably improved synth.

Who's it Built For?

While it does demand a pretty hefty investment, you're getting a hefty amount in return. The packed control panel alone is enough to slap a grin on your face and the breadth of options definitely completes a core writing, recording and performing tool. On top of all of the above, the Fantom EX features a ZEN-Core engine and a 32-band vocoder so you can sample yourself. It also comes equipped with a CV/gate output that supports Eurorack module integration so you can start building enormous layers. The list goes on and on, serving to polish off an insanely versatile model that's able to take on anything.

Roland Fantom 7 EX Synthesizer

The Roland Fantom 7 EX is, without question, my favourite keyboard workstation I have ever owned — and that is saying something considering I’ve owned and played a huge number of synthesizers and workstations over the years.

I’ve spent time with serious hardware from multiple generations: classic analogue synths, modern hybrids, flagship workstations, virtual analogue monsters, and studio centrepieces. Yet the Fantom 7 EX somehow manages to bring everything together into one inspiring instrument that genuinely feels special every time I switch it on.

What immediately struck me about the Fantom 7 EX was the sheer quality of the sound. The synth engines are phenomenal. Whether I want huge cinematic textures, vintage analogue warmth, aggressive electronic basses, evolving pads, or polished modern workstation sounds, it delivers effortlessly. The ZEN-Core system is unbelievably deep, but it never feels clinical or lifeless — it feels musical. That matters.

The workflow is another huge reason why I love this machine so much. Roland absolutely nailed the balance between depth and immediacy. So many workstations become frustrating menu-diving exercises, but the Fantom encourages experimentation. The large touchscreen, hands-on controls, sliders, knobs, pads, and overall layout make sound design and composition feel fluid and enjoyable instead of technical and exhausting.

The keybed on the Fantom 7 EX is superb. It feels expressive, responsive, and inspiring to play. Combined with aftertouch, pitch/mod controls, and seamless integration with external gear and software, it becomes an instrument you genuinely connect with emotionally rather than simply operate.

What also makes the Fantom 7 EX stand out is its versatility. It can be the heart of an entire studio setup. Sequencing, performance control, synthesis, layering, DAW integration, live work, composing — it handles all of it beautifully. I honestly feel like Roland created a workstation that finally understands how modern musicians actually work.

And perhaps the biggest compliment I can give it is this: the Fantom 7 EX makes me want to create music constantly. That spark is rare. Many keyboards impress you technically for a while, but very few continue inspiring you day after day. The Fantom does exactly that.

For me, this isn’t just another workstation. It feels like the culmination of decades of synthesizer history brought together into one elegant, powerful, deeply inspiring instrument.

The Roland Fantom 7 EX is an absolute masterpiece.
