Roland JP-08 Boutique synthesizer

General

Some synthesizers need no introduction, and the Jupiter-8 is undoubtedly one of them. In 2026, the 1981 legend celebrates its 45th anniversary, and Roland is marking the milestone with a brand-new instrument in the compact Boutique format. The original has been revered for decades as one of the most iconic analogue synths of all time, and anyone looking to track one down today faces eye-watering prices. You might already be familiar with a Boutique version of the Jupiter-8, but this JUPITER-08 is a completely redesigned instrument, featuring the same instantly recognisable colourful interface alongside a heavy dose of modern performance options. Sometimes you just have to treat yourself to a piece of synth history—especially when it fits right into a backpack.

Vintage soul, modern tricks: the Roland JUPITER-08

While the original offered eight voices (hence the '8' in its name), this updated model can reach up to 32 voices thanks to an advanced polyphony mode. If you prefer to keep things retro, you can choose the classic architecture inspired by the original; if you want to push boundaries, you get plenty of headroom for rich chords and brand-new sonic textures. Voice allocation and pitch behaviour have been refined to capture that characteristically lively vintage vibe, including the subtle pitch drift that enthusiasts love so much. On top of that, you get 17 effects, a dedicated delay, and a reverb featuring five algorithms—including a shimmer mode that adds an octave-shifted sparkle. A two-part polyphonic 64-step sequencer with motion recording, an arpeggiator, and a hold function complete the package, making it just as capable on stage as it is in the studio.

Keyboard included: the Roland JUPITER-08 as a complete mini-instrument

Until now, playing a Boutique module required purchasing the K-25m keyboard dock separately; with the JUPITER-08, that dock comes right in the box. New silver-coloured side panels give the synth a distinct identity, perfectly matched by the included keyboard frame. Featuring a built-in speaker and powered by either four AA batteries or USB-C, you can make music anywhere—from the tour bus to the kitchen table. Whenever needed, the synth module can easily be detached for standalone use in your studio setup. Plus, with USB-C (audio and MIDI), standard MIDI connections, and an external clock input, it fits seamlessly into virtually any modern production workflow.
