Call it a guitalele, a children's guitar, travel guitar - spell it as guitarlele for all we care - fact is, the Korala PUG-40 is bound to put a smile on your face. It's the same size as a ukulele, which makes it the perfect instrument for the small hands of children, yet unlike a ukulele, it has six strings in an ADGCEA tuning. Going from this guitalele to a standard-size guitar is as easy as pie.
Construction of the Korala PUG-40-LBU
The body and neck of the Korala PUG-40 are made completely out of acoustically optimised polycarbonate, which makes it exceptionally light and sturdy, while its sound is as good as that of wooden versions by other manufacturers. The prime advantage of polycarbonate is that it isn't affected by changes in humidity or temperature, making this guitalele the perfect instrument for a life on the road. This Korala isn't at all bothered by the cold or a spot of rain. In addition to its highly practical features, it still is an exceptionally cheerful instrument to have or receive as a present from somebody.

TLDR: 5 sterren voor het instrument zelf, 1 ster voor de stemmechanieken, 3 sterren gemiddeld.
Een snaarinstrument van plastic heeft hele specifieke voordelen (die voornamelijk onder de 'gooi- en smijt' categorie vallen), maar er zit ook een heel specifiek risico aan vast: Alles is vast. Met andere woorden, als de intonatie niet klopt zit je met de gebakken peren, om maar wat te noemen. In dit geval geen klachten: op alle zes de snaren is de twaalfde fret precies een octaaf. Wel heb ik het zadel uit te brug genomen en er twee millimeter afgehaald; de actie was veel te hoog. Maar het is oneerlijk om dat als argument tegen dit instrument te nemen, hetzelfde geldt namelijk voor vrijwel elk snaar instrument af-fabriek. Vervelender is als de bovenkam te hoog is, en dat is bij deze niet het geval.
Wel erg vervelend is de erbarmelijke kwaliteit van de stemmechanieken. Zonder ze misbruikt te hebben komen van twee van de zes de plastic knoppen los, en de palletjes buigen wel heel snel krom, hetgeen ze onbruikbaar maakt. Die moeten dus een update krijgen, wat de totaalprijs weer wat minder vriendelijk maakt.
Over de geluidskwaliteit heb ik het nog niet gehad, enerzijds omdat ik er nog niet echt op heb gespeeld in verband met de falende stemmechanieken, anderzijds omdat dat niet het primaire doel van dit instrument is. Laten we wel wezen, "polycarbonaat" mag sjiek klinken, het blijft gewoon plastic.
