General
After the long-standing success of the natural-coloured GL1 Guitalele, Yamaha decided to release three new colours. New for 2012, the GL1-TBS is finished in an eye-catching Tobacco Brown Sunburst. This classic ukulele-sized guitar is the ideal affordable beginner guitar for children. But also the advanced guitarist who is often on the road will find this a very suitable travel guitar. After all, it comes with a bag included.
Construction of the Yamaha GL1-TBS
Despite its low price, the Yamaha Guitalele is made with fine woods. Spruce for the top, meranti for the sides and back and a nato (mahogany) neck with an 18-fret rosewood fingerboard. As a result, the GL1-TBS has a remarkably warm and full sound for an acoustic instrument of its size. Because the neck, at 43 millimetres, is almost as wide as that of a classical guitar, the Guitalele will immediately feel familiar to guitarists.
Tuning of the Guitalele
Like a classical guitar, the GL1-TBS has six nylon strings. However, these are tuned in ADGCEA. A standard ukulele tuning with an added low A and D string. The guitarists among you will also recognise this as standard guitar tuning, but with a capo on the fifth fret. This means that any guitarist can get along with the Yamaha GL1-TBS Guitalele right away!

I bought these strings for my Cordoba Mini guitar that has a 510mm scale length (just over 20 inches) and tunes to A just like a classical guitar with a capo on the 5th fret (NOTE: IT IS NOT the Mini II that has a longer scale length and tunes to standard E). It was a previously owned one from a music store and came strung with new ball-end full scale classical guitar strings that sounded muddy and dead. These Aquila 96C Guilele/Guitarlele strings are recommended for A-tuned instruments with a shorter scale length of 17 inches (432mm) which is normal for a Guilele, but I thought i would test them anyway. Usually the same strings will feel tighter on a longer scale length than on a shorter scale length instrument and 78mm (3 inches) is quite a difference. I am very pleased with the sound. The strings feel and sound more alive and the mini guitar rings better. It sounds more snappy and a bit more like a guilele than a scaled down classical guitar, and that is what I wanted.
