General

The accordion is a wonderful instrument in its own right, but Roland's FR-4X V-Accordion takes things to the next level by opening up a whole new world of possibilities. This model shares the same sound engine as the FR-8X, but comes at a more affordable price. It gives you a wide range of accordion sounds, as well as organ, orchestral and drum sounds. Thanks to the pressure sensor on the bellows, you can expect the same response as a traditional accordion. The FR-4X-BK has an intuitive layout featuring 37 keys and 120 bass buttons with velocity sensitivity that can be turned off if required.

Share Your Music with the FR-4X

Playing music and recording with the Roland FR-4X is easy thanks to the built-in USB port. There's also a headphone socket for when you want to practise in silence. When you want to make some noise, however, the FR-4X has its own powerful sound system on board featuring two speakers and a tweeter. It's even possible to connect this digital accordion to external MIDI devices. For performing live, there's a Line Out so that you can connect directly to a PA or mixer.

The Roland FR-4X V-Accordion really comes in to its own when it comes to sounds. While an acoustic accordion produces just one sound, the FR-4X has 100 accordion sets and more than 150 orchestra sounds including organ, violin and even guitar. De FR4x maakt indruk. Ziet er fantastisch uit, niet te zwaar en erg veel mogelijkheden, waarbij de bediening ook nog 's dik in orde is. Maar wel de handleiding lezen!
En samen met de gratis te downloaden software is het op de PC/Laptop nog veel leuker, want dan kun je heel makkelijk alle mogelijkheden simpel bedienen.
Ja, zo'n accordeon kost veel geld, maar bedenk dat je praktisch alle accordeons na kunt maken als je de tijd en energie er in stopt. De niet-accordeon klanken (b.v. orgels/sax/synth/trompet) klinken erg goed en zijn zeer dynamisch te bespelen. Een echt goede akoestische accordeon vervangen zal het niet kunnen, maar voor de gemiddelde luisteraar/bespeler is het meer dan prima.
En eigenlijk mag je geen vergelijk maken tussen de digitale en analoge varianten. Ze complementeren elkaar.
Een puntje van kritiek is dat voor deze prijs een (soft) koffer voor transport toch wel zou moeten kunnen.
Ik geef 5 sterren. Punt.

Wrote the following about Roland FR-4X-BK V-Accordion with Keys (Black)

Even wennen na ruim 40 jaar een accordeon van hout en met stalen tongen.
In de afgelopen jaren heb ik voorgaande versies van de Roland V-accordeon een paar keer in de winkel uitgeprobeerd; ik was toen niet erg enthousiast.
Ik heb nu de tijd genomen om deze nieuwe FR-4X uitgebreid thuis uit te proberen, en heb uiteindelijk besloten het instrument te behouden. De klank is verrassend goed, vooral van de midden en lagere registers; en van de bas! de hogere registers komen soms wat schel uit de hoek. Ik gebruik inmiddels een actieve speaker wanneer ik samen repeteer met andere instrumenten; dat is een wereld van een verschil. Om solo te spelen / repeteren volstaat de ingebouwde versterker prima.
Ik zal mijn akoestische instrument niet snel afdanken; ik zie de Roland vooral als een welkome lichtgewicht (nog geen 9 kg) aanvulling. Het instrument laat zich zeer soepel bespelen, zowel de toetsen als de instelbare balg. Het spelen op het instrument geeft echt het gevoel van spelen op een akoestisch instrument: het is heel knap hoe vibrato en andere balg effecten worden gesimuleerd.
Op batterijen houdt het instrument het lang uit; dit versterkt het gevoel van een "echte" accordeon.
Er zit software bij om het instrument te "tunen". Dat werkt prima, maar vergt - naar mijn inschatting - wel wat PC handigheid voor installatie en gebruik.
Tenslotte is er nog de mogelijkheid om samples van andere instrumenten in te zetten. Dit vergt wel een andere manier van spelen. Afhankelijk van het instrument wordt de balg óf de aanslaggevoeligheid (ook aan baskant) gebruikt voor volume en effecten. Dat laatste ben je als accordeonist natuurlijk niet gewend :)
Al met al: een zeer interessante aanvulling op (en voor sommigen wellicht vervanging van) een akoestische accordeon. Met zeer goed gesamplede instrumenten en een fijne behoorlijk natuurgetrouwe bediening.
Ik aarzelde tussen 4 en 5 sterren. In directe vergelijking met een akoestisch instrument van hoge kwaliteit (dat vaak veel duurder is dan deze Roland) legt de Roland het af. Maar zo'n vergelijking gaat op alle fronten mank - daarom 5 sterren voor heel veel muziekplezier voor een prima prijs.
