General
The Death By Audio Amp Crash is not your run-of-the-mill distortion or amp-sim pedal, but a mini-amp in pedal form. Inside is a genuine 3-watt amplifier driving a built-in 2-inch speaker, whilst an internal microphone picks up the sound from the speaker – just like a traditional guitar amp. This gives you organic harmonics, natural compression and even feedback-like behaviour that is difficult to replicate with conventional gain pedals. Via the DI OUT and MIC OUT, you can seamlessly blend the direct amp signal with the mixed speaker signal.
Tone and effects
In terms of drive, the spectrum ranges from dynamic crunch and solid overdrive to thick distortion, brutal fuzz and controlled ‘sonic chaos’. Using the GAIN and TONE controls, you can adjust the response from warm and full-bodied to bright and biting, with a playing feel as if you were turning an amp up to full volume. For added colour, the Amp Crash also features built-in Reverb, Echo and Chorus. Use the effects selector switch to choose the type of effect, then adjust the intensity and parameters using DEPTH and TIME.
Connections and use
In the studio, this pedal is ideal for layering unique amp textures, but it’s also an inspiring tool at home or on your pedalboard. The combined output sends through your mixed DI and microphone signal. If you want a bigger sound, there’s an EXT. SPEAKER output for an external speaker cabinet (minimum 8 ohms, 3 watts or more); as soon as you connect it, the internal speaker switches off automatically. The Amp Crash runs on a 9V DC adaptor (centre negative) and draws 300 mA, partly due to the built-in amplifier.
