A more hybrid take on the concept, the Yamaha P-S500 comes wrapped in the form of a sleek digital piano yet piles on an array of sound options, rhythms, and even coaching tools. Designed for both experienced and serious student pianists, this piano can be expanded with a frame and pedal unit (not included) to complete a full upright-style playing feel.

The Yamaha P-S500: Features

In terms of sound, players are offered the choice between a Yamaha CFX and a Bösendorfer Imperial which, combined with the GHS keyboard and Virtual Resonance Modelling, offers a superbly tactile and enveloping sonic experience. To help train wrist, hand and finger muscles, the velocity sensitivity of the keys can be adjusted, and to help players learn new pieces and songs without even having to learn to read music, the P-S500 even features a light-based guidance system that indicates the keys that need playing next. The influence of Yamaha's DGX Series pianos can also be seen in the design of this model, so a full library of different sounds has been included alongside the grand pianos and a selection of rhythms, so this piano can also serve as a high-end keyboard. The polyphony totals 256 to support smooth and near-unlimited playability, and a microphone can also be plugged in so writers and performers can sing along to their playing before plugging the piano into a computer to lay down ideas or send and receive MIDI.

In-Depth Control via the Smart Pianist App

As soon as this model is paired with the Smart Pianist App, the breadth of control it offers reveals that this piano was almost designed for the partnership. Plug it into a tablet loaded with the app, and your device suddenly becomes the display screen for the piano, offering an array of options including an audio-to-score function, which can take an audio file, read it and automatically generate the piano score. As well as helpful learning functions, the app offers a full backing band that can be user configured to provide customised accompaniments. The app is continuously updated with new features and combined with the hardware, completes an expansive setup for students and composers as well as performing pianists.
