General
The design of the PL 80c microphone by Electro Voice is based on the BK-1, which was quite popular in the '80s and 90's. It was a great-sounding condenser microphone for live use, but its battery was difficult to reach. That problem has been solved with this PL 80c, because it's a dynamic microphone that doesn't need any power. What's left over is a warm, detailed sound that isn't too blatant.
Super-cardioid
The PL 80c has a super-cardioid polar pattern, which means that it is very directionally sensitive. It picks up sound very well from the front, but won't pick up sound from the sides or back, meaning it's great for live stage use. This directional trait also means that it's possible to get a lot more gain before feedback becomes an issue. The sonic character of the PL 80c is such that the frequency is perfectly tuned to the human voice. This high-quality Electro Voice microphone offers an organic sound that is easy to mix. In other words, it's a microphone that will make sound technicians happy.
Protection
The microphone's capsule is shock mounted to avoid handling noise and it features a foam pop screen for avoiding those provoking plosives. The foam also protects the capsule from the moisture that comes along with enthusiastic vocalists.

Stevige microfoon, weinig contact geluid en geweldige feedback reductie. Dat je daardoor iets rechter in de microfoon moet zingen/spreken is niet echt een minpunt. Ik kan nu voor mijn monitor boxen staan en instrumenten mixen tegelijk met mijn stem, zonder dat ik de hele dag met koptelefoon op sta in te spelen en uit te proberen. Bij opname neem ik sporen nog wel vaak afzonderlijk op (met koptelefoon op bij zang) en dan doet de PL 80c niet onder voor andere bekende microfoons in deze prijsklasse. Het is mijn tweede Electro-Voice en ik begin echt fan te worden van het merk, doordat ze hun ontwerpen net iets bruikbaarder maken voor specifieke inzet (bijv. feedback reductie), maar een goede balans houden met waar het in hoofdzaak om gaat, het op te nemen geluid goed omzetten voor opname of versterking.

Voor mijn dochter gekocht heeft ook een shure 58 maar met deze toch een fijnere klank en dynamiek. Veel minder vermoeiend. Carlijn gaat de muzikantenopleiding in Amsterdam en zal zeker heel veel plezier van deze microfoon gaan hebben. Verder uiteraard een top supersnelle service van BAX.

Heel naturel klinkende microfoon, die voor een zeer schappelijke prijs over de toonbank gaat. Misschien minder geschikt voor de zingende instrumentalist door de supercardioïde richtingskarakteristiek, waardoor er toch redelijk recht in de microfoon dient gezongen te worden. Maar, ieder nadeel heeft zijn voordeel, dat scheelt dan weer een pak in "gain before feedback"!

Voelt stevig en solide en klinkt geweldig!
Het is wel even wennen dat ie alleen van voren geluid opvangt
Maar klinkt veel beter als de SM58 die ik voorheen gebruikte

Ik zocht een goede zang microfoon voor live gebruik en repetities en wilde weleens wat anders dan de standaard sm58. Na het lezen van vele positieve ervaringen met deze mic is mijn keuze op de pl80c gevallen. Het is een degelijke microfoon met goede gain, weinig feedback gevoelig en in vergelijking met de sm58 een mooie open klank. Het "foute kleurtje" vind ik een leuk detail, maar hij is ook gewoon in het zwart verkrijgbaar. Zoek je een mic in de klasse van de sm58 dan zou ik de pl80 zeker eens proberen. Die heb je voor hetzelfde geld en misschien ben je dan ook aangenaam verrast.
