General
In honour of the 55 Unidyne's 75th anniversary, Shure released the 5575LE Unidyne limited edition microphone They've done all in their power to make sure this mic looks just like the original, including the large birdcage grille. The 5575LE even has a similar pickup pattern and frequency response to the original 55 Unidyne. Of course, it's been tweaked with a little 21st century technology in order to reduce the chance of feedback and to lower self-noise. It's also fitted with a modern XLR connector, so that it works with any modern-day PA system.
Shure 5575LE Unidyne: history
The original 55 Unidyne was released in 1939, and soon became a true icon of professional microphones. Music legends such as Frank Sinatra, Doris Day, Tony Bennett and Elvis Presley all used it for its unique sound and look. Shure managed to give the 5575LE the same frequency response as the original, with a dip around the 400 Hz and peaks at 1.5 and 5.5 kHz. Thanks to a gradual roll-off in the higher frequencies, this mic has a great rounded sound, while vocals and speech remain clearly intelligible. Of course, those are the two areas that the Unidyne has always excelled in - vocal and speech amplification. With this updated version of the classic 55 Unidyne, the stage is yours!
