Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 (2nd Gen)

With their second-generation 6i6 USB audio interface, Focusrite has released the next step in the evolution of the Scarlett series. The Scarlett is one of the best-selling interfaces in the world, so Focusrite had their work cut out for them when they set about finding ways to make it even better. They have, however, succeeded. Both the interior and the exterior have seen improvements, and now you can record up to 192 kHz in 24-bit audio quality, where it used to be 96 kHz.

Scarlett 6i6 2nd Gen: Connectivity and improvements

Just like its predecessor, this audio interface has 6 inputs and 6 outputs. You'll also find 4 analogue inputs (2 on the front and 1 on the back), 4 analogue outputs, 2 digital inputs and outputs, a MIDI input and output, and 2 headphone outputs. The preamps for both the line and microphone inputs have been improved as well, so you can tackle the kind of high output that you'd get from, say, a humbucker, head-on. Either way, they have a higher gain stage that can be adjusted in great detail. You'll also notice right away that the robust metal gain knob is now better suited to the industrial design.

Lower latency and included software

Now that the system has lower latency, you'll be able to work much better in real time when recording instruments or vocals. You can even monitor your mix in zero latency mode, thanks to the included Focusrite Control software, which also allows you to easily adjust routings and configurations. You're bound to be impressed with all of the software that comes with this interface, which includes an exclusive version of Pro Tools, along with the Focusrite Creative Pack with 12 plugins, Ableton Live Lite, Softube Time and Tone bundle, and no less than 2 GB of Loopmasters samples.

• Please note: to use this interface with Windows, you need to install a driver. This is not necessary for use with Mac OSX, as the Scarlett 6i6 is class compliant with Mac.
