General

The Golden Age Audio R1 Active MK3 is an active ribbon microphone with a warm sound. Unlike the passive version, this mic has a built-in FET amplifier. This ensures high output and low impedance. In practice, this means that you can easily record soft instruments and voices without a very expensive preamp. Moreover, you can also feel free to use long cables; which often causes problems with passive ribbon microphones. The sound of the Golden Age Audio R1 Active MK3 is compared to classic RCA microphones from the 1940s. The R1 active combines this old-fashioned sound with handy modern extras such as a high pass filter. This is no superfluous luxury as ribbon microphones are known for their extreme proximity effect. Finally, you can also record very loud instruments, just like with a passive ribbon microphone. Simply switch on the -10 dB pad and you can record a fighter jet.
