General

Imagine this: if a cockpit were 4 metres wide, the pilot would have to run from left to right in order to manoeuvre the plane correctly. The same idea applies to your pedal board. That's why Boss has created the handy Effects Switching System, the ES-5. This device allows you to connect and chain 5 effects pedals and rearrange their order as well. Its built-in memory allows for up to 200 loops and other settings. You can also save your favourite settings on any individual stomp box so you can retrieve it again easily!

Tap-dancing is out, switching is in

When performing specific songs, you probably prefer certain pedals, but the last thing you want to do is dance around your board in order to press them at the right time. The ES-5 offers the solution. With it, you can connect five pedals and set them up any way you like them: chorus-reverb-distortion, fuzz, delay-chorus, and so forth. You can also connect an external controller like a tap a tempo or expression pedal, or MIDI equipment to the Switcher. Thanks to a backlit LCD display, you'll always be able to see clearly which preset or setting is selected.

Options galore

As you may already know, this ES-5 is the more smaller version of the Boss ES-8 flagship model. Even though it offers fewer preset options, it's a truly ingenious device with a flexible routing option, for instance. You can switch pedals around easily, even if they aren't next to each other, and even create a parallel effects chain and use two effects on a single pedal. Of course, the entire pedal is noise-free and can be used in bypass mode. The Boss ES-5 is a practical switcher for those who want unlimited possibilities with their stomp boxes.

Wrote the following about Boss ES-5 Effects Switching System

This pedal switcher is really good and well made. It offers extensive programmabilitys, with loops and midi assignable functions. It permit to program any switch with different function. For example you can assign to the switch "1" the relative preset and another function if pressed a second time. You can program the channel switching for an Amp via 2 jacks 1/4 TS - TSR (latching) or connect an external additional switcher (only momentary TS - TSR) or an expression pedal. The 5 loops can be used in front of your amp, and at the same time you can swap preset on your delay stomp placed between the send and return of your amp with the midi cable. You can assign a fixed BPM for each preset or tap on a switch internal or external in order to set it. Highly recommended.
