General

Since Moog presented the Subharmonicon as a limited edition DIY kit back in 2018, we're not going to pretend it's completely new. Following huge demand however, Moog now introduce the ready-made version of the Subharmonicon. Just like the Mother-32, this module also fits in the original 2/3-tier racks but offers way more control elements as well as an expanded patch panel. While at first sight it may look like there aren't many synthesis options, let us just say, 'patch and thou shall find.' Also, since we're talking about a genuine Moog, the sound is deliciously analogue and warm.

The Moog Subharmonicon: Poly-Rhythmic

The interesting thing about this synthesizer is that it features a poly-rhythmic sequencer. This actually comes down to two sequencers with four steps each, which means you play two sequences simultaneously and adjust the individual tempo. The result? Polyrhytmic patterns that depending on the parameters, can be listened to for a long time before you'll notice a repeat. Put into the right hands, the Subharmonicon paired up with a few other models and a bunch of effects can create truly exhilarating sounds.

Moog Subharmonicon Synthesizer

Everything about this shows quality and craftsmanship - the packaging, manual, overlays as well as the module itself. But switching it on shows just how incredible it is - oscillators and filter sound great but it’s the fascinating polyrhythms and sequences that it produces that make it so unique. Not a typical synth by any means but for anyone looking for something different - and a Moog to boot - this is well worth checking out.

Moog Subharmonicon Synthesizer

This is the most amazing piece of synthesiser gear I own. You really need to spend time with it and read the manual especially the tour part. I have just basically spent the last three days playing with this thing and it continues to impress me. I love the Moog sound and their ladder filter and this is a band in a box. I absolutely love the way it harmonisers the two oscillators and 4 sub oscillators no matter what sequencer step tuning you have. It’s a genius invention and I can now see how it is such a great performance instrument. I understand why reviewers have said they pick it up and realise hours have passed! As far as I know there is nothing like it. It’s worth every penny and I salute Moog for giving to us. I absolutely recommend the Subharmonicon even if it’s the only synthesiser you own. I think this will remain a classic long after Moog stop making it.

Moog Subharmonicon Synthesizer

Beautiful box!

My first and only synth, for now. But it's very intuitive, unpredictable, surprising and confusing.. there's many patches available online so you'll never get stuck.

It can do bass and leads with ease, but would work better with another box like DFAM or the Minitaur and some effects.

Very happy with this purchase!

Moog Subharmonicon Synthesizer

What a beautiful instrument this is. I've never owned a Moog before, but this semi-modular synth tempted me into the Moogiverse with its unique set of features. On the face of it, the two four step sequencers look very limited, but they really deliver. Infinitely evolving complex rhythms are a few knob tweaks away (and these aren't any knobs - they're genuine Moog knobs!). I also really love harmonically rich drones, and again these are easily produced; here the sub oscillators really come into play. Together with the legendary ladder filter, all those patch points and plentiful Moogiful knobs (did I mention the knobs?), this is an instrument that simply invites you to play it. Which I have been doing. A lot.

Moog Subharmonicon Synthesizer
