Once upon a time, during the 1970s and 1980s, analogue synthesizers ruled the music business. In those days, many legendary synthesizers were built that remain popular to this day. If you have any interest in synths, you'll probably be able to name a dozen from the top of your head. Chances are the Korg MS-20 features in your list. This fully analogue synthesizer was and is still used by famous producers and artists and, these days, it has a considerable cult status. With this reissue, the Korg MS-20 Mini, Korg have introduced this living legend into the 21st century.

The MS-20 Mini

Fervent advocates of the 'analogue' phenomenon can rest easy: this MS-20 Mini still features an analogue signal path. It really is a true reissue of the classic Korg MS-20, with only a few alterations. With the original MS-20, patching was executed by means or large jacks, whereas the MS-20 Mini features mini jack-size patch connectors. The MS-20 Mini is equipped with keys that fit its name: these mini keys are slightly smaller than those of the original synth. The new MS-20 Mini can be easily integrated into a modern studio, as it is fitted with both a MIDI connector and a USB MIDI connector.

The sound

As the MS-20 Mini is equipped with an analogue signal path, digital aliasing (mirror frequencies that occur when digital oscillators are played unfiltered at an extreme pitch) is not an issue. This is particularly noticeable at (spectrum-technically) more extreme sounds. And you should definitely be prepared for extreme sounds! The MS-20 Mini allows for modular synthesis (you can make numerous connections with your patch cables), so you can create the most outrageous sounds. That is why this reissue of the MS-20 is so much fun! The MS-20 Mini is the ideal synth to help you take your first steps into the world of modular synthesis.
