General

The minimum-size MAX 100 from Peavey is a 1x10" bass guitar amplifier boasts a 100 Watts of power and has been fitted with a 10" premium speaker with DDT protection. One of the reasons why this compact amp excels is its smart design, which encompasses a tuned bass reflex port, an interface with ground lift to prevent unwanted sounds from entering the mix, and a special cab construction for superb highs, even in smaller spaces. Maximum tonal control is provided by the on-board EQ and various switches, one of which is the Kosmos-C switch that helps shape optimal lows, while the pre-gain can be boosted as needed using the TransTube.

As someone who teaches from home (and gigs on the side) I was after an amp that could do both jobs without compromise on either end. At home I know that I can turn it up to any volume and have clarity in tone and strength, and when I want to practice out of hours I know that I won't be annoying the neighbours thanks to the inclusion of the headphone socket too.

Needless to say that even for its relatively small stature I am certain that it will stand its ground amongst even the heaviest of bands - in terms of loudness and power this stands up with the best of them. Sure, it might be physically smaller than other 100w combo amps on the market, but you wouldn't know this from just hearing it. The clean and distortion channels are crisp, allowing for all frequencies across the board to be properly articulated without anything being sacrificed.

In terms of hardware, it boasts a decent array of options on the interface that help dial in a tone that would benefit any style of player, and that clean channel especially is a great foundation for those players who wish to use pedals. It also has an in-built tuner - a welcome surprise to the amp, and a great addition for myself as a tutor to help my students visualise the tuning process.

This is a great solid bass combo amp that I would be recommending to other bass players I know. For power, compactness, clarity in tone, and looks too - this is a great amplifier.

ENGL Doubles the Power of the Master Series

Tuesday March 8, 2016 By Julie Alexander

The first ENGL MetalMaster and RockMaster 20 amplifiers enjoyed great popularity, thought they didn't quite quench guitarists' thirst for even more power. Once the ENGL technician's caught wind of the requests, they were only too happy to comply, and have recently released their response in the form of the 40W MetalMaster and RockMaster. You can get either model as an amp head or a combo.

NAMM 2016: Extra Small and Extra Low With Peavey's 6505 Series

Monday January 25, 2016

The Peavey 6505 series is widely acclaimed, but apparently the amp manufacturer still felt something was missing from the lineup. That's why they've added two new products to the range. One is called the Piranha Micro Head, a 20W hybrid top that can practically fit into your jacket pocket. The other is the Guitar Subwoofer, a cabinet with an 18" speaker and 300 watts of power to beef up the low end. Together, they're a great pair.
