The crash cymbal is a percussion instrument that is used to add the occasional accent. It is usually played with drum sticks, but when you use mallets you can also create a gradually swelling sound. Most crash cymbals are between 14 and 18 inches wide. The timbre of the crash is mainly influenced by its luster: a 'clean' look provides a brighter sound, whereas oxidised cymbals sound duller. The crash typically belongs to an acoustic drum kit, together with other cymbals such as the hi-hat, ride and the splash cymbal.
