Mixers have been around since time immemorial (well, more or less). A device with inputs, faders and dials. But in today's age of virtual control panels via a touch-device, are all those dials and faders really still necessary? With this Mackie DL16SE, this manufacturer is clearly betting on the new reality where all those knobs just sit in someone's jacket pocket. It's a digital mixer with very good Onyx+ preamps, where you control everything with an app. Does it matter? Sure; all those (rotary) knobs and faders just end up costing money, so by transferring those controls to a device that people already have anyway, you save on the price. By the way, mobile devices are an obvious example, but a regular computer (Windows, macOS) works too.

Features of the Mackie DL16SE

An additional advantage of this digital approach is that you naturally benefit from the features that a digital mixer invariably offers these days. Think a four-band parametric equaliser and compressor per channel, and four fx buses with reverb, delay and chorus, among others. In short, a very interesting mixer that is just as interesting in the studio as it is on stage. In the studio, you benefit from all I/O, as the mixer is available as an audio interface. On stage, you are very well able to connect your whole band with all its microphones, so even as a member of the band you can control things with your phone.
