As the keyboard player for a band, you want to simply pack a great keyboard that's doesn't feel like an oversized and heavy surfboard but one that does with high quality sounds, including genuine keyboard instruments like (digital and electric) pianos, organs and synth pads because want it or not, you know those '80s ballads will forever remain stuck in the back of your mind. And since we're talking preferences anyway, you probably want waterfall-style keys as well to make your swipes even smoother Well, you've come to the right place because the Yamaha YC61 comes with all of the above and then some!

Features of the Yamaha YC61

The YC name stems from Yamaha's vintage-rich history back when they built combo organs. A few years ago, Yamaha presented the Reface YC, which may have brimmed with organ sounds but doesn't come close to the all-encompassing character of this YC61 loaded with Yamaha icons like the CFX and C7 pianos and electric pianos like the CP70, CP80 and DX-E models. Drawbars allow you to sculpt your own organ sound while the rest of the face of this stage keyboard has been fitted with rotary knobs and buttons because after all, live settings don't really allow you the time to scroll through extensive menus.

The Finishing Touches

Of course, no stage keyboard is ever complete without a handful of effects. Not only because a little reverb sounds great on pianos and pads but because vintage organs can make grateful use of effects. Next to reverb, you're getting speaker/amp effects , a 3-band master EQ with adjustable mids and a looper to unleash your creativity. Don't fret about the polyphony either, it's potent enough and note-stealing is out of the question. Echt een topper voor live denk ik.

Ik was meer opzoek naar een studio keyboard dus ben uiteindelijk voor de 73 toetsen gegaan die meer een piano/rhodes achtige aanslag heeft.

Compact, redelijk geprijsd, eenvoudig en zeer goed geluid.
Dat is de korte samenvatting van de YC61 voor mij.

Ik ben zelf meer een synth man en zocht een stage piano om die akoestische (piano) klanken in te vullen in m'n setup. Ik ken de Nord Stage 3 goed van onze toetsenist en dat leek mij de beste optie met de meeste mogelijkheden (maar helaas ook een ongeveer dubbel zo dikke prijs als de YC).
Na wat rondkijken kwam ik bij de YC en CP serie van Yamaha uit, waarbij de CP nog meer piano georiënteerd is.
Ik heb geen piano ervaring, dus een hammer action leek me een brug te ver en de compacte 61 toetsen versie van de YC trok mij aan.
Ik heb drie opties bespeeld (Nord Stage 3 compact, CP88, YC61) om een goed vergelijk te kunnen maken in de winkel en de NS3 won dik qua mogelijkheden, maar de CP en YC klonken voor mijn gevoel ook heel goed.
De YC trok mij meer aan vanwege de orgel sectie, uitgebreidere FX en extra patches EN de 61 toetsen optie.

Na een paar weken spelen kom ik tot de volgende YC conclusie:
- Degelijk apparaat. Knoppen voelen goed, prima behuizing.
- Piano en orgelsectie zijn echt top qua geluid. Hij heeft eigenlijk niks nodig om goed in de mix te zitten. (waar de NS3 eigenlijk altijd teveel bas heeft).
- Intuïtieve bediening, met focus op snel kunnen instellen wat je live nodig hebt.
- Synth en overige geluiden zijn goed bruikbaar voor erbij.
- Keybed speelt heel lekker. Tussen hammer action en keyboard action in.
- FX is goed bruikbaar.

Punten waar je rekening mee moet houden:
- Als midi controller is hij 'ok', maar ik hoop dat ze nog wat opties in de FW toevoegen om de bediening nog wat makkelijker te maken (bijv. geen octave / transpose met knoppen, alleen in het menu)
- Er zit geen aftertouch op. Voor piano en orgel is dit niet nodig, maar voor de synth klanken en als controller is dat wel een minpuntje.
- Het bewerken van geluiden is minimaal mogelijk (vergeleken met een complete synthesizer ervaring als de Nord Stage 3 oid)

Mijn conclusie is dat ik verwacht veel plezier te gaan hebben aan de YC61.
Hij klinkt als een klok en is makkelijk te bedienen. Alles wat je 'on stage' nodig hebt, zit er op.
Waarschijnlijk gaat je geluidstechnicus blij met je zijn, want hij is lang niet zo 'muddy' als de NS3.

Als je enkel pianoklanken nodig hebt, is de CP serie waarschijnlijk 'voldoende' en geeft voor hetzelfde geld een hammer action keybed.
Als je meer met synthklanken wilt kunnen, dan is een Nord Stage 3 een betere optie. (completer).
Maar voor dit geld denk ik dat een YC een erg goede stage piano is.

De YC61 gekocht als aanvulling op mijn Nord Stage 3. Mooie sounds en gemakkelijk te programmeren. De handleiding is niet uit het plastic geweest. Ik gebruik de Bluetooth dongle (BT-01) en kan mijn setlist op mijn mobiel organiseren (Soundmondo app) en dan via Bluetooth midi de sounds naar de YC pushen. Hoe cool is dat! Verder over de YC, prima keys, niet de touch van semi weighed keys natuurlijk, het is tenslotte ook waterfall. Alle sounds die je nodig hebt, zitten er in. De tuimelschakelaartjes zijn handig en zien er ook mooi uit.

Fabuleux. Un coup de maître de la Yamaha en créant cet excellent instrument de scène ultra moderne, léger, capable de répondre à tout type de partition avec des sonorité typiques d'une très grande qualité. Je ne vais pas plagier ce qui a deja été dit depuis son lancement au Namm 2020 que je ne peux que confirmer. Une belle mention cependant pour ke toucher et la jouabilité de ce clavier waterfall que j'adore. En composition, c'est un instrument ultra inspirant qui me fait systématiquement voyager.
