Yamaha EAD10 electronic acoustic drum module
General
Recording acoustic drums normally involves the use of many microphones and a mixer. With Yamaha's EAD10, however, that's all in the past. The EAD10 consists of an electronic acoustic drum module and a sensor that helps you practise, record and perform with your acoustic drums. The sensor has two built-in stereo microphones and a bass drum trigger and converts the acoustic sound from your drum kit into a stereo digital signal that can then be customised using the EAD10's on-board controls and allows you to add effects and samples. The EAD10 is an easy way to turn your acoustic kit into a hybrid one, giving you many more possibilities.
Sounds and effects
The module has reverb, effect and trigger controls on board. Reverb adds spaciousness to your sound and there are 11 different types on offer including studio and concert hall. The effects section also gives you plenty of choice with distortion, delay and a compressor among the options. With trigger you can emphasise or minimise certain sounds. Together, Yamaha calls these options scenes and they've already set up 50 of them for you but it's possible for you to add up to 200 more of your own. The module has inputs for adding extra triggers or drum or cymbal pads (all optional) to your existing setup. You can even add your own files to use as trigger sounds. In total, the EAD10 has no fewer than 757 sounds on board!
Practice sessions, performances and recording
The EAD10 can help you practise as well as perform and record and everything can be easily saved on to a USB stick. With the free iOS Rec'N'Share app you can connect your device to the module and record video and sound at the same time which can then be shared easily with whoever you like. Thanks to the aux input (or USB port) you also have the ability to play along with your favourite tracks from your smartphone, computer or tablet. You can even choose to play along with an automatic click track and adjust the tempo of the song you're playing along to. This makes the EAD10 excellent for practice sessions too. When it comes to performing live, the signal can sent straight to a mixer. Studio-quality recording is also possible and you can send the sound straight to your audio software thanks to the USB to MIDI connector.
