General
If you're looking for something really old, you might consider an old Ampec AG440B. That is a tape machine that has been used frequently in the history of pop music. But yes; price, availability, maintenance. Those are the three things you do run into with that kind of old equipment. The IK Multimedia T-RackS Tape Machine 440 is then a much better alternative, compatible with the free T-RackS CS. With downright genius technology, IK Multimedia mimics this old beast to perfection. And as you might expect from tapes, you get all sorts of imperfections on your audio as a result. But those imperfections are the soul of the beast. They are the imperfections that engineers love. In other words: the tape era is certainly not over, but in virtual form it is a lot easier - and more affordable.
