General
If you're a perfectionist when it comes to fine-tuning the frequencies, the API 5500 Stereo/Dual Mono Equalizer is a must-have. This 500 Series-sized EQ sets you up two 4-band sections (low, low-mid, high-mid, high), plus a high/low shelf switch for eliminating noise and beefing up the sound a little. You also get a proportional Q function for varying the bandwidth in relation to the filter amplitude, but what really defines the API 5500 as a high-end equalizer are the 2510-/2520 op-amps and the built-in API 2503 transformer. The overall design is based on the API 550 console EQ, but instead of an unbalanced input with basic functions, here, you get a balanced in/output, an integrated power supply, and a range control that supports a supple and controlled mastering phase. Meanwhile, true hard-wire bypass ensures zero signal loss. In addition to balanced XLR inputs and outputs, the 5500 features a balanced jack input that interrupts the XLR input signal without bypassing the internal circuit or affecting the gain level.
