General
For years, the name AKG has been synonymous with excellent studio microphones. Constructed in Vienna, their condenser mics have managed to find their way into the collection of many high-end recording studios around the world. The C 414 series has been around for a while and the revamped C 414 XLS continues the high AKG standard. This Austrian condenser mic comes complete with a shock mount, pop filter and windshield.
AKG C 414: versatile
One of the best qualities of the C 414 is its versatility. It offers nine different settings so you can adjust the directional characteristics according to your personal situation. From omnidirectional to figure-8 and four intermediate settings, this large-diaphragm mic has got it all. Its audio character is similar to that of its popular predecessor, the legendary C 414 B-ULS. The 414 XLS offers a modern design with linear frequency characteristics and a neutral sound. This makes the 414 a true reference microphone that is able to capture the sound of an acoustic instrument in its purest form.
Adjustability
In order to get the best out of this mic, the C 414 XLS has been equipped with switchable attenuation levels and bass-cut filters. Also, the directional characteristics can be changed with the push of a button and your selection is indicated by an LED light. The LED light also detects even the shortest of audio peaks blindingly fast. If you use the C 414 XLS in a fixed installation, you can easily bypass all the settings. With a dynamic range of 152 dB, this mic offers incredible audio in any situation.

This is one hell of a beast - since I bought it I've used it for a variety of studio recording purposes, including as a room mic for drums. It is so versatile, I can't recommend it strongly enough.

De C414 is zeer gevoelig en door de 9 beschikbare ruimtelijke patronen letterlijk en figuurlijk zeer veelzijdig.
Het voornaamste verschil met zijn broertje de XLII is dat de XLS geen extra boost rond 6 kHz heeft, waardoor de XLS meer geschikt is voor instrumenten en backing vocals, maar iets minder voor leadzang.
Het is heel goed dat je er een grafiek bij krijgt met de frequentierespons van jouw microfoon: zoals ik merkte, kan die respons significant afwijken van de grafiek in de handleiding.
Mijn enige echte kritiekpunt betreft het koffertje:
Het bovenstuk incl. paperassen en popfilter is ongeveer even zwaar als het onderstuk incl. mic en shockmount, en het scharnier tussen beide delen gaat niet verder dan zo'n 100 graden. Gevolg: na opening van het koffertje klapt het bovenstuk achterover zodra je het loslaat, waarbij het onderstuk meekantelt en soms zelfs de mic uit zijn bedje de lucht in wordt gelanceerd; uiteindelijk komt het koffertje dan in een W-vorm te staan. Dat had beter gekund.
Een ander aandachtspunt is het bevestigen van de mic op de shockmount:
Het is te billijken dat de mount van kunststof is om doorzakken van een mic-boom te helpen vermijden, maar het vastdraaimechanisme van de mic in de mount voelt nogal krakkemikkig. Het is dus behoorlijk eng om mount en mic ondersteboven te hangen (bv. in een mid/side-opstelling); je moet dan heel goed oppassen dat de mic er niet uit valt.

Al een behoorlijk aantal microfoons gebruikt voor opnames maar deze microfoon geeft, naar verwachting, een zeer professionele kwaliteit. Gebruiksvriendelijk met een breed scala aan richtingskarakteristieken. Ik heb de C414 nu gebruikt met figure-8 patroon in een MS configuratie bij een opname van een klassieke gitaar en dit klinkt geweldig (ruimtelijk)! Ga 'm ook gebruiken voor o.a. opnames met percussie, zang en gitaarversterker. Groot voordeel is dat de C414 XLS een all-around workhorse is (en dus snel het geld dubbel en dwars waard). De XLII zal misschien nog mooier klinken voor zang (door een lift na ~3 kHz) maar de XLS heeft een vlakker spectrum en is daardoor voor veel instrumenten een uitstekende keuze.

Een no-brainer. Als je het geld hebt, moet je er een paar aanschaffen. Zeer goed op vocals, akoestische instrumenten, overheads, toms, gitaarversterkers (tot 152 dB ...), etc, etc.
Het enige dat van mij mag veranderen, is het shock-mount systeem. Het huidige systeem is een klem-systeem van kunststof. Als de mic dan omlaag hangt, krijg ik toch de kriebels... Ik heb liever schroefdraad systemen.

Obbligatorio averlo. E' uno dei microfoni più versatili del mondo, dagli strumenti classici a quelli elettrici, dalle voci agli ambienti per sound design non delude mai.
Certo non è il migliore in tutto, nel senso che se volete fare solo un tipo di registrazione, solo voce o solo violino, la mia scelta cadrebbe su altri microfoni, magari più costosi, ma come microfono di base per iniziare il proprio setup è obbligatorio averlo.
