General

Yamaha has taken their HS5 studio monitor and added some interesting new features for the HS5I. For starters, it's now equipped with handy mounting points so you can mount it to the wall, or suspend it from the ceiling. This makes the HS5I applicable to an even broader array of situations, not just in the studio, but also in commercial environments and locations where space is limited or the available surfaces aren't suitable. It's simple, yet effective. Clearly, Yamaha has listened to their customers' request for a more versatile mounting solution!

Innovative design for preventing resonance

Yamaha's HS5I monitors are made from a very flexible type of MDF. This ensures that acoustic attenuation takes place, thus preventing unwanted resonance. Furthermore, the HS5I features a noise-reduction level of 6 dB. That means there is no audible noise whatsoever, and the reproduction of your mix is as natural and uncoloured as possible. The interaction between the 5-inch woofer and the 1-inch tweeter results in a balanced and responsive sound. With defined lows and virtually zero distortion, this monitor is ideal at any volume for your (home) studio!

The HS5I adapts to its environment

The HS5I possesses an amplifier that drives the woofer and the tweeter separately. This gives the monitor a neutral response over the entire frequency spectrum. It also features two response controls which allow you to enter the characteristics of the room where the monitors are positioned so you can make the most of the natural acoustics. You can connect the HS5I to balanced as well as unbalanced outputs like mixers, audio interfaces, and keyboards.

HS5i - the "i" just means that these are the same as the HS5 but have extra mounting points.
I bought a pair of these to go with my Yamaha CP88 piano.
Are they good monitors? - yes, very!!! loads of detail across all ranges.
Are they a good match for a stage piano? - yes, and so much better than pianos with built-in speakers.
Is there enough bass? - Yes (perhaps suprisingly. There's no need for a subwoofer unless you have a need for excess)
DO they look ok? The white finish of the cabinets and drivers is stunning! So much nicer than boring old black.
Would I recommend them? - yes, without any hesitation.

Fijne monitors, stukken beter dan de Presonus Eris 3.5 die ik hiervoor had. Ze klinken neutraal, maar dat was ook precies wat ik zocht. Meer dan genoeg power voor een thuisstudio. Ik heb ze nog niet gebruikt om op te mixen, maar om mee op te nemen was het al een flinkje vooruitgang.

Mis je toch wat bas of treble, dan kun je nog extra toevoegen en ze zo iets aanpassen aan je ruimte. Ook niet onbelangrijk: ze zijn stevig gebouwd en voelen degelijk aan.

Mooie sound en klinkt voor veel verschillende genres goed. Wat ik fijn vind zijn de mogelijkheden om de speakers aan te passen naar de ruimte waar ze in staan met de schakelaars op de achterkant. Al met al een veelzijdige speaker voor in mijn thuis studio, met bovendien een fancy wit design (ook niet onbelangrijk)

This wasn't necessarily the best monitor on the market, but it could be found in just about every studio.
