General
This Neumann classic features three switchable pickup patterns and a pre-attenuation feature. These properties make it perfect for a wide range of applications. The U 87 is the most famous and popular of all the Neumann studio microphones. This U 87 Ai is one of the leading microphones when it comes to orchestral recordings, spot miking for several instruments, and it can also be used for all manner of vocals and speech applications.
Specs of the U 87 Ai
It features a large double diaphragm capsule with three switchable pickup patterns - omnidirectional, cardioid and figure-8. You can switch between them via a switch beneath the head grille. A 10dB attenuation switch can be found at the rear of the microphone. The microphone can process SPLs of up to 127 dB without suffering from any distortion.

Een fantastische microfoon! Een solide bodem van lage frequenties met een duidelijke, gedetailleerde midrange en een mooi afgerond hoog. Niet voor niets de studio standaard voor o.a. vocalen. Let er wel op dat je hierbij niet eens een standaard swivel mount meegeleverd krijgt! Dat kan simpelweg niet bij producten met deze prijs. Vandaar dat ik hem heb geretourneerd.

Eigenlijk volstrekt overbodig om over deze microfoon een review te schrijven...
De U87 is in vrijwel elke studio over de hele wereld te vinden en dat is niet zonder reden,
De kwaliteit staat dan ook niet ter discussie.
Gelukkig heeft de Ai een wat hogere signaalafgifte en tevens een betere signaal/ruisverhouding dan de voorloper, de standaard U87.
Vervelend is wel dat de microfoon zonder enige vorm van statiefbevestiging geleverd wordt, de op de foto's afgebeelde starre statiefbevestiging is optioneel, terwijl de bijbehorende shockmount voor een bedrag van 269 Euro (oktober 2015) over de toonbank gaat, een bedrag dat mijns inziens niet in verhouding staat 'tot wat het is'. (Maar dat komt waarschijnlijk omdat er "Neumann" op het doosje staat... :P )
