General

Introduced back in 1966, the Neumann U87 condenser microphone and its offspring can now be found in countless studios across the globe. The U-87 Ai is the modern version which, compared to its predecessor, is a lot more sensitive and offers an improved signal-to-noise ratio alongside good-old, industry-standard vocals.

The Neumann U87 Ai: Three Pickup Patterns

The U 87 Ai features a double diaphragm which means it has the option to toggle between pickup patterns. Besides the standard Cardioid mode, this pro-grade Neumann mike can be dropped into omnidirectional or bidirectional (figure-of-8) mode. It sounds fantastic near drums and guitar amps and, thanks to the -10dB pad, the microphone accurately captures loud instruments without any distortion. Meanwhile, any low-end clutter can be filtered out as you record using the built-in high-pass filter. Wooden case included.

Wrote the following about Neumann U 87 Ai Large-Diaphragm Condenser Microphone (Nickel)

Damn.

I was hoping to believe the reviews/ads that say "As good as a U87!" "I actually prefer the Yellow Snow 87!"

I was hoping to send it back, finally happy, convinced that it wasn't THAT good a mic and I didn't have to gulp and cough up all that money.

I have a few decent mics including a TLM103.

This mic is simply in a different league when connected through a Metric Halo interface. Its so good that I am sending the TLM103 to get checked out by Sennheiser.

Expensive? Jeez yes. Worth it? Unfortunately, yes. I have only used it so far on male and female vocals, but its rich, detailed output and, well, uncompromising honesty, is in a class of its own.

So I am keeping it.
