General
Rycote is known for its excellent quality shockmounts and windshields. With this updated Cyclone series, the quality has been taken even further. For instance, the famous 3D-Tex design, effectively the basket around your microphone, is now even better executed, shielding wind more efficiently. If you want to make accurate and focused recordings with your condenser microphone (or the shorter shotgun microphones), you can't beat the Rycote Cyclone. Also, the chassis has been improved and contact noise is now addressed at the source, preventing vibrations from resonating further towards the microphone itself. The Rycote Cyclone Small kit is issued in three variants: the XLR, LEMO and MZ modules. The one described and pictured here is the XLR variant.
3D-Tex material: now even more advanced
All Cyclone screens are made of the so-called 3D-Tex material developed to keep nasty side noises and wind out of your recordings. Here, it is important that the sound source to be recorded is rendered neutrally. This means that the material has excellent transparent acoustic properties and a high damping factor. The material is also lightweight so no extra weight is added to the microphone. You can use this Cyclone windscreen in extreme weather conditions and, as an audio professional, you can always count on superior audio reproduction.
Shorter XLR connector and superior transparency
Also very handy about the updated construction for both the Small and Medium variants is the short XLR connector. This ensures that you can perfectly use the Cyclone for longer (shotgun) microphones. This keeps the housing compact, but still provides space for longer microphones. This can rightly be called revolutionary! The open construction of the 3D-Tex material possesses superior acoustic transparency. This is partly due to the organic design of the material. For example, you will not find straight or parallel surfaces, but only rounded and curved shapes that dampen the tonal characteristics of the room. These effects are in fact inherent in the design of most 'tube' wind screens.
