An indispensable tool in any mixing engineer's kit bag, compression doesn't just tame the dynamic range of the treated instrument or track to give you a more consistent mix, but fattens up the sound. While this process was once exclusively manual, as compression plug-ins raise their game, it's now almost exclusively virtual, and as a result, there are a lot of options to sift through. While you could opt for a compressor that emulates this vintage model or that old classic, you could just as easily go for something that does it all. Developed to serve as the only compression plug-in you'll ever need, the IK Multimedia Comprexxor features eight different ratios, where 1:1 merely adds some heat without actual compression, basically setting you up with a 'max' limiter. You also get two saturation options: valve-simulation and tape-simulation for adding your preferred flavour of warmth, as well as full access to opto-style compression. Add that to the low-pass and high-pass filters for the side-chain and you have everything you need to balance, boost, and enhance those all-important nuances.
