General
The Allen & Heath ZED-14 is the most compact 19-inch PA mixer from the ZED generation. It's a smaller and cheaper model out of the popular PA series, but it guarantees the same quality as the other models. This live mixer features 6 mono inputs and 4 stereo inputs, as well as 4 AUX sends and a USB connector. The AUX send/return signal can be transmitted bidirectionally via USB, so that effects from a computer or laptop can be used. The ZED 14 is equipped with a new type of fader, which has a length of 100 mm. With the right software, all channels (mono as well as stereo) can be recorded separately. You can't set each channel to a separate track, but it does allow you to balance the track that you're recording with the EQ of the mixer. Using the mixer as an interface and adding effects via USB is also an option. In short: this versatile mixer is ideal for use at gigs and in home studios!

Op zoek naar vervanging voor het twintig jaar oude Soundcraft tafeltje dat gebruikt werd voor cue/koptelefoon mix in de homestudio was het uiteindelijk een keuze tussen een nieuwere Soundcraft of de Allen & Heath.
Het is de ZED14 geworden;
+ Prijs/kwaliteit
+ 100mm ALPS faders
+ Uitstekende pre amps
+ Functionele vormgeving
+ Uitgebreide routing mogelijkheden
+ 1/4" en 1/8" koptelefoon outputs
+ Inserts op mono kanalen en 2 bus
+ 4 aux sends
+ Constructie (Individuele verticale printplaten per kanaal)
De USB interface is een extra bonus.
Ik had liever TRS outputs gezien op de ALT OUT in plaats van RCA maar dat is werkelijk het enige min puntje dat ik kan bedenken.

Ben zeer tevreden over dit mengpaneel; hoge kwaliteit voor redelijke prijs. Ik gebruik hem voornamelijk voor homestudio-werk; kleine ensembles, veelal akoestisch. Deze Zed 14 biedt voldoende (veel) mogelijkheden, is overzichtelijk en degelijk gebouwd. Ik vond maar één minpuntje; het knopje voor de phantom-power was niet goed in te drukken, het zat een beetje 'weggezakt' in het mengpaneel.
Verder prima geluidskwaliteit! Ik ga er lekker mee aan de slag!

Na mijn ervaring met de XENYX1832 van Beringer, moet ik vaststellen dat deze mixer op een aantal punten duidelijk beter scoort terwijl hij nauwelijks duurder is:

- de voeding wordt helemaal niet warm bij 24-uur bedrijf

Mixer nu een klein half jaar in gebruik en zie het als een verademing. Hiervoor altijd gewerkt met een behringer eurorack ub2442fx-pro maar dit is, uiteraard met alle respect, niets vergeleken met deze. Faders voelen soepel aan de mengtafel ziet er overzichtelijk uit. Ook de opname mogelijkheid middels de geintegreerde usb is simpel maar effectief. Waar je bij de behringer vaak moeite had met de EQ is deze daarin tegen zeer helder en werkt super. Ook clipping komt eigenlijk niet voor bij deze mengtafel iets wat helaas voorheen nog wel eens met enkele regelmaat voorkwam.

Een prima mixer echter er is geen nl. gebruiksaanwijzing bij zodat er onnodig veel tijd verloren gaat bij het uitzoeken hoe het een en ander in elkaar zit. Mijn engels is niet zo goed dat ik dit soort voor mij ingewikkelde dingen begrijp maar de service is goed bij Bax dus nemen ze de tijd voor je om het uit te leggen. Maar toch vervelend.
Wat mij nog meer stoort is dat bij het opnemen de eerder opgenomen track niet via de hoofdtelefoon is af te luisteren zodat je dus niet via een mic. kan opnemen zonder het geluid van de speakers mee te nemen. Dit komt volgens de meneer bij Bax omdat anders dan in de omschrijving staat vermeld de mixer bedoeld is voor life gebruik. Er staat toch duidelijk dat de mixer voor life en studio gebruik is.
