Some preamps give you a single tone. The iCon UFO gives you a whole palette – and lets you choose which shade suits your recording, without needing a soldering iron. This Class A discrete valve microphone preamp comes in a striking, somewhat ‘spaceship’-like casing, with a glowing valve and a vintage VU meter that shows you exactly what’s happening. But the real story lies beneath that transparent cover: the tube can be swapped in a matter of seconds, without any tools. Instead of having to buy four different preamps to get four different characters, you buy just one and swap the tube. Looking for pure transparency for a vocal recording? Clean tube. Want to give that same voice a bit of vintage warmth and saturation tomorrow? Pop in a different tube, and you’re sorted. For anyone who likes to experiment with tone-shaping without having to buy a different piece of kit every time, this is exactly the tool you’ve been looking for.

The tubes in the iCon UFO

Four interchangeable tubes are included as standard: the pre-installed Electro-Harmonix 6922EH for a neutral, transparent sound with open highs – ideal for vocals and acoustic recordings. You also get a 12AT7EH for tight bass and articulate treble (great for clean guitar, bass and ribbon mics), a Sovtek 12AX7LPS for warm mids with deep saturation, and a Sovtek 12AX7WA for a smooth, vintage warmth that works on virtually any source.
