Whether you've just set out on your first epic synth adventure or have already battled a few synths in your time, the new Arturia Microfreak is a compact, little challenge that is sure to inspire you! This paraphonic hybrid synthesizer isn't just impressively powerful, it's attractively-priced too. Essentially, it breaks the unwritten rule that an affordable synth can't be freakishly versatile at the same time: two very good reasons why this synth deservesa space in your collection. Another seductive detail about the Microfreak is that it was developed in collaboration with Mutable Instruments, meaning it gives you direct access to the sound of the legendary Plaits Eurorack module!
MicroFreak: sure to make your heart beat faster!
The Microfreak has 12 oscillators, 5 bespoke engines and 7 modes from Mutable Instruments on board. Wavetable synthesis, virtual analogue, physical modelling and auto-oscillation are all possibilities too. The digital oscillator can be seen as the beating heart of the Microfreak and this, in combination with the gorgeous analogue Oberheim SEM filter, is sure to make your heart beat faster if not skip a beat entirely! If you, as a synth fan, knew just how many sounds you could create, you'd already be itching to get your hands on this model!

If things aren't quite freaky enough for you yet, don't worry, there's more! As well as an on-board sequencer, the Microfreak has Spice and Dice functions that can really shake things up! You can record up to four automations and change the patterns as much as you like. The original signal can be extensively influenced by the 5x7 mod matrix. This potent synth also has a PCB keyboard with polyphonic aftertouch and pressure sensitivity. Finally, the Microfreak can also be used as a controller for modular synths or your DAW thanks to its USB, CV and MIDI outputs.

I started out with hardware 30 years ago (Kawai K4 if you're interested) and owned several more pieces including a Yamaha CS1x, RM1x, and A-3000, before going fully 'in the box' and only using exclusively VSTs and plugins for the past 15 years of very sporadic use. Since picking up the production baton again this year, as powerful and fantastic as they are, I'm just a bit bored of doing everything on the screen, and felt an overwhelming itch to get more hands on with a physical synth again. With space and budget to consider, I wanted something useful, powerful, and fun. All my research led me here to the MicroFreak.
What a brilliant little unit this is! The presets are fantastic and varied, and instantly playable with 'that' keyboard, and a whole host of hands on control. Knobs a-plenty! It really slams with some decent power and heft to the sound. The balanced output is great and being able to drive headphones directly means it is easy to use away from the computer. Favourite setup so far is just using with an iPad for power (I haven't experimented with MIDI to the iPad yet but understand that's an easy link up with many apps).
With my basic synthesis knowledge I've been able to easily knit together some useable presets from scratch and enjoyed the heck out of every moment. Punchy basses, atmospheric pads and superb leads. With a supersaw on board, it's easy to dial in some amazing trance leads. JP-8000 vibes here we go! It's really quite an inspiring little thing.

This is such a huge amount of fun to play - although only one oscillator, each mode has loads of tonal variation and body within its three main parameters - then mangling everything in the matrix which is super quick and easy, leads as easily to classic, phat sounds, or more surprising, experimental noises. The sequencer is excellent, a step up from Arturia’s Keystep sequencing - and spice dice add some really nice and usable variation. I actually quite enjoy sound design without FX as it leads to creativity with the controls you’ve got, but still running the whole synth through some Reverb / Delay / Mod - does help to send the sounds into the next stratosphere. Would really recommend highly, especially with the updates that seem to have come fairly regularly - the three new oscillators in the last one (from Noise Engineering) are probably my favourite three - and the updates are free - no brainier for just over £200.

For such a small synth you can make some really big sounds! I’ve found it really easy to get to grips with and there are some good video’s on YouTube to get you started. Love the new oscillators with the new firmware, I had to update mine as soon as I got itv which was so easy with the midi control center app. This may be a budget synth but you get so much for your money, I was pondering getting one for ages but now I know I made the right decision as there are so many ideas you can generate with this little beauty.

This is a brilliant little unit, at first I was hesitant but having heard some demos (which don't do it half as much justice!) I thought I would give it a go and im glad I did. The sounds are amazing and you can instantly tweak them into a million different things as well as make your own.
Once you get your head around the MicroFreak and the software it becomes very intuitive.
Will probably buy another one at some point and for the price its an absolute bargain.
One (or more) of these going into pedal fx or DAW fx and you can get lost for hours.

Een mooi en betaalbaar apparaat met een hoop mogelijkheden. Het is mijn eerste hardware synthesizer en het heeft flink wat mogelijkheden om mee te pielen. Ik had er geen microfoontje bij voor de vocoder, maar een pc headset werkte na wat instellingen aanpassen ook. Ik had zelf wat meer variatie in geluid verwacht en gehoopt, de meeste geluiden zijn vrij elektronisch. Toch al met veel plezier mee gepield en muziek gemaakt. Ook mijn kinderen hebben er plezier mee :)

Compacte synth met mooie interface. Tot nu toe de gebruiksaanwijzing nog niet nodig gehad, dus hij werkt redelijk intuïtief. Dacht eerst dat ik de toetsen niet fijn zou vinden, maar die zijn erg reactief dus dat is een meevaller. Al met al een heel veelzijdig instrument, nog lang niet uitgespeeld!
