General
Named after its Onyx microphone preamps that back each microphone input up with 60dB of crystal-clear gain, Mackie's Ony24 analogue mixer is an undeniably professional bit of kit designed for extensive studio or live use. Besides 18 microphone inputs, it's also possible to send 24 line signals to the Onyx24, which in fact doubles and shines as a high-end USB audio interface. Hook it up a laptop or computer, and you'll be able to record 24 channels or playback four tracks at the same time via the mixer. For any less complex stereo recordings, you're by no means bound the USB interface, since the Onyx24 even offers the option of recording via the built-in SD recorder. Meanwhile, the collection of effects loaded into this premium bit of studio-kit can be used to enrich both recordings and music playback.
The Mackie Onyx24: Beautiful, Powerful, Intoxicating
The tight control panel of this analogue mixer bears a classic Perkins equaliser-design that harks back to the British-built desks of the '60s and '70s and offers the unique perk of the same rich and warm, vintage sound. More current features include an improved filter control and minimal phase switching; a more effective semi-parametric mid-range frequency control, and a bank of built-in effects. An immediately coherent, clear-cut Studio Command section provides effect, preset, recording, and SD card or USB playback management alongside wireless Bluetooth streaming functionality.
