General
If there’s one solid-state condenser microphone you’ll find in virtually every professional studio, it’s the classic ‘87. The iCON Space 87 is their own take on it: the same open, smooth sound signature, the same versatility, but without the hassle of tube maintenance and at a price that suits a budding home studio. With three polar patterns (cardioid, omnidirectional and figure-8), the mic is suitable for a range of situations. Omni for capturing the room’s ambience, cardioid for a strong focus on vocals or an instrument. Very low noise, with switches for low-cut and pad – a fully-fledged studio microphone, in other words! It’s a workhorse for singer-songwriters or podcasters, suitable for both singing and speaking, without having to deal with tube warm-up or replacement. That’s a difference compared to, for example, the 67 series – this is an FET mic. It’s also excellent for acoustic guitar, piano, strings and brass. In short: a single microphone that can handle virtually any recording situation, with the sound the professional world has relied on for decades.
