If you're looking for a decent DAW, but don't want to pay the main price: get Steinberg Cubase Artist 15. In the most important respects, it is not inferior to the Pro version, and what has been left out is functionality you can in principle do without, or alternative solutions can be found for it. The title 'Artist' is well chosen here: this package is really more than enough to shape your own music to perfection.

The main novelties in Steinberg Cubase Artist 15

Why do we still use a DAW as a virtual tape machine, anyway? Because that's what all those horizontal bars actually are: bits of tape we cut and paste into. With the new Pattern Sequencer, you get yet another new - though not unfamiliar - method of entering notes: the form-factor of a polyphonic step sequencer. Because yes: entering notes this way is a lot faster than playing them in. There is a very interesting collection of Writing Room Synths available; fast easy no-frills synths to sketch with.
