Set yourself up with every essential mixing tool you're ever going to need: the Mackie Pro FX12 v3 is a professional level 12-channel FX mixer with built-in USB interface, 3-band EQ and Hi-Z switches for connecting guitars, basses or other instruments. Aux and Monitor outputs are included per channel so that separate sub-groups can be set up, along with a 100Hz Low-cut filter (again, per channel) to shave off any unwanted lower frequencies, while the seven Pro Onyx Mic Preamps provide +48V phantom power and deliver up to 60dB of gain and low-noise performance.

Every one of the microphone inputs of every mixer included in the Mackie ProFX v3 Series is regulated by the renowned Onyx Mic preamplifiers. These not only ensure the highest possible, studio-level audio quality and performance but provide consistently clean signal with an incredible amount of headroom and crystal clear sound, even from the most gain-hungry studio microphones. In combination with the Single-Knob Compression, input levels are kept in check while the maximum possible headroom per channel can be found with a simple adjustment. On top of this, it might go without saying that a touch of pro-level compression will polish any vocal performance whether live, recorded, spoken or sung.

BE WARNED - The USB output is taken from the Main Outputs.

Therefore if you're planning to record and playback at the same time you will need another audio interface or you'll get the nasty shock I did of feedback. Or lesson learned RTFM before you buy.

I was replacing my venerable 1604VLZ-Pro, which was finally giving up the ghost after nearly 20 years, and it had taken a bit of a kicking over the years, with the last service not doing it any favours at all (always make sure it is done by a reputable person guys). To get it fixed was half the price of the 12FXv3, so I thought I'd save a considerable amount of desk and streamline - removing unused channel space and my audio interface at the same time.

Note: I emailed Mackie the very question about the outputs via twitter and didn't get a reply... so guess I should have taken the answer as no.

What could have been an absolutely brilliant desk is marred by what I can only describe as a shortsighted and stupid decision, rendering the product for my and many others needs in a home studio setup a bit... meh. Mackie needs to get some younger Home Studio QA guys in those that are using a DAW.

The USB Output should have been switchable between Main and Sub 1/2, giving both use cases. Come on guys - mixing desks are not just the domain of clubs.

Now for the good points:

The Build quality is Mackie-tastic - you just cannot get better.

The faders and rotors are high quality and a delight to use.

The USB Inputs work as you'd expect (especially the USB 3/4), this is now acting as my computers main in/out - reducing the number of wires and DACs involved.

Up against my Focusrite Scarlett the Ins were holding it's own on the latency - not quite as good mind.

The FX do sound quite good (not that I'd ever use them).

So, if you want a mixing desk - you can't go wrong.

If you want an Audio Interface - look elsewhere.

Maybe a firmware update can fix this.

Prima mixer. Laptop via usb-poort werkt prima. De faders geven enorm bedieningsgemak. En veel extra effectmogelijkheden en instellingen.Beslist geen miskoop.

In hoofdzaak was ik op zoek naar een mengpaneel met een goed audio-interface voor opnames van mijn keyboards te maken. Doel was om deze opnames via usb direct met de pc op te kunnen nemen en mij deze Mackie prima geschikt leek volgens de specificaties.

Ondanks dat men in een aantal reviews beweerd dat het mengpaneel als een tank gebouwd is viel mij het erg lichte gewicht al meteen op. Ik zal niet zeggen dat de bouwkwaliteit slecht is maar t.o.v. andere merken valt mij de bouwkwaliteit tegen. Knopejs van de faders voelen naar mijn smaak best wel ietwat fragiel aan en hebben een wat afwijkende vorm.

Maar datgene waarvoor ik mijn keuze op deze Mackie had laten vallen was vooral het kunnen opnemen op de pc via usb. Dit blijkt dus niet zo recht toe, recht aan te zijn bij dit mengpaneel en vergt best wel wat puzzelwerk om het aan de praat te krijgen. Het is dus niet zo dat de mains output rechtstreeks via usb uitgestuurd word en dus ook het volume niet rechtstreeks via mains out geregeld kan worden.

Mackie heeft namelijk iets vreemds gedaan door in feite het mengpaneel in twee circuits te splitsen namelijk het live gedeelte en daarnaast het usb gedeelte. Dit houd in dat je in feite alle kanalen dus apart moet uitsturen voor usb en voor live te kunnen spelen, zeer onhandig dus.

Samengevat, voor puur alleen live te spelen is het op zich een aardig mengpaneel maar voor opnames e maken naar mij mening niet geschikt ondanks het goede audio-interface.
